In a world obsessed with the new, the Mending Lab teaches the revolutionary value of durability. This course is not simply a repair workshop, but an immersion in the culture of textile restoration, understood as an act of respect toward the material and the human labor that created it. During the week of activities, students learn an ancient and silent manual skill, capable of performing two opposite miracles: making damage disappear through invisible mending—painstakingly reconstructing the original warp and weft—or enhancing the fabric’s wound by transforming it into a unique artistic mark (Visible Mending). It is a journey that requires slowness and virtuosity, teaching students to read the DNA of precious fabrics such as tweed or jacquard in order to intervene on their imperfections, transforming a worn garment into an archive piece of renewed value.
Who is this course suitable for?
Far from being an amateur sewing course, the Mending Lab is aimed at a qualified audience seeking to acquire a niche technical skill. It is essential for vintage and archival fashion professionals who need to restore valuable garments to preserve their market value. It is also intended for tailors, pattern makers, and quality control specialists working in the luxury sector, where after-care service has become crucial. Finally, it is suitable for designers and fashion students who view upcycling and circular fashion not merely as a trend, but as an ethical and contemporary design methodology.
What are the career prospects?
Mastering the art of invisible mending means possessing an increasingly rare and sought-after skill (“hard skill”) in the Haute Couture and luxury segment. Trained professionals can find positions within Quality Control departments and Customer Care services of major brands, which require technicians capable of handling complex repairs on expensive garments. Furthermore, the course provides concrete tools for working in the luxury vintage market and archival restoration, or for launching independent businesses related to sartorial regeneration and artistic customization, sectors experiencing strong growth thanks to increasing awareness of circular fashion.
