The 2013/2014 academic year was exciting and full of challenges for the students completing their training at Istituto Secoli.
At the Secoli Fashion Show 2014, it was possible to admire their creations; we reveal a little more about one of those who stood out for their commitment and talent:
After graduating in “Fashion Design” from the Politecnico di Milano, Martina Cardillo enrolled in the Master’s in Menswear Patternmaking and Tailoring at Istituto Secoli.
We meet her while she is preparing her thesis; promising to “steal” only a few minutes of her time, we manage to ask a few questions and distract her from the concerns of the final exams in September.
She tells us that she always dreamed of living in major international metropolises like New York, but she found her place here in Milan, a city that always manages to provide her with new inspiration.
CAD patternmaking is her specialty; “after all,” she reflects, “since I was a child, I have always excelled in subjects where precision is fundamental, such as technical drawing, and this was a great help at Istituto Secoli, because to be a good patternmaker, it is necessary to pay attention to detail and always strive for perfection.”
She confesses with a smile that precisely because of her “sometimes” excessive meticulousness, the instructors often tell her to try to be a little less self-critical and hard on herself; on the other hand, however, they have often praised her in class during group work for her diplomacy and ability to mediate. This personality trait, we might add, will be very useful to her in the future, as the patternmaker has the difficult task of interpreting the designer’s ideas as effectively as possible while simultaneously creating projects that take technical manufacturing requirements into account.
Martina dreams of working as a patternmaker in a company that gives her the opportunity to prove her worth and, at the same time, increase her knowledge and experience.
Of course, it has been a demanding year with many challenges to overcome, starting, for example, from the first days of class when “I felt less prepared than many of my classmates who had previous work experience in the clothing industry; however, this pushed me to give my best.”
Today, Martina is one of the top students in her course, and the instructors who recommended her for this interview, along with the entire Secoli staff, sincerely wish her the success she deserves and that she realizes her dreams!
