The final event in the series dedicated to fitting and pattern correction, organized by Istituto Secoli in collaboration with ANTIA (the national association of fashion system technical professionals), has concluded.

Driven by a topic that resonated deeply with the participants…

Fitting and pattern correction for both garments and patterns is a highly delicate and crucial phase in the clothing design and production cycle. When performed effectively, it serves as an irreplaceable guarantee of product quality, contributing significantly to building final customer loyalty.

…and the innovative and engaging teaching approach adopted by Istituto Secoli… Like all design and production activities within clothing companies (and beyond), “fitting” is carried out by a working group where diverse experiences and skills must converge toward a single goal. In fact, the changing variables—such as fit, materials, fabrics, accessories, and yarns—mean that there are no fixed procedures or manuals; only experience and experimentation through group collaboration allow for the most appropriate solution. Therefore, only the ‘cultural’ development of the group itself proves effective through the transfer and dissemination of knowledge. During these working days, participants became active protagonists of the training, and their professional growth was driven by the comparison and understanding of specific group composition techniques. The experience was excellent and educational for everyone… more events will be coming soon! Below are the impressions of Simona Borghesan, a teacher at Istituto Secoli and a participant in the fitting seminars: On May 12, 2012, the first of many seminars on fitting was held, organized by Istituto Secoli in collaboration with ANTIA, the national association of fashion system technical professionals.

The days begin with an introduction to the “cell” logic in defining the working group, presented by Prof. Danilo Migliorini, Organizational Director of Istituto Secoli and head of the “Cell Design” project.

This is followed by a brief presentation on defects by teacher Gaetano Currò before moving on to the day’s practical work.

Attendees are divided into two working groups, consisting of pattern makers from various companies, as well as students and teachers from Istituto Secoli, creating a team rich in diverse professional experiences.

The purpose of the day is to observe and discuss—examining three different types of garments as a base and construction type—the issues that garments may present due to the type of basic construction or physical body shape, which can vary and thus affect the garment and its final appearance.

Garment construction and pressing (both intermediate and final) can also be fundamental to the success of the garment—steps that should not be overlooked when aiming to create a high-quality product.

It is interesting to observe how the two groups, despite starting from a different order and different observations, work by analyzing the same issues:

Analysis of the basic construction, flat garment measurement, and garment fitting on models to see the differences according to body shapes.

These observations lead to many discussions examining the same ‘critical points’ that characterize the creation of trousers.

Construction differences are discussed, comparing the most important parts; the type of fabric, stitching, and pressing of the garments are analyzed, along with the line and fit, thus deciding together on the type of correction and fitting to be performed.

Finally, both groups identify the same issues common to the three bases tested on the models, thus reaching the same conclusions and results.
