FIRST EDITION OF OPEN FASHION LABS KICKS OFF

The week at Istituto Secoli concluded with the first edition of the Open Fashion Labs: experiential orientation workshops dedicated to high school students and anyone wishing to enter the world of fashion and learn about the Institute’s educational programs.

Two immersive days, designed to discover in a concrete way how a fashion product is created: from concept to realization, from materials to process, through to the design method.

Through the direct experience of “making,” participants experienced the Secoli Method, a project-based approach that since 1934 has combined creativity, technique, and product culture, evolving alongside the fashion system.

PORTA VENEZIA DESIGN DISTRICT x ISTITUTO SECOLI: THE UNIFORM & VISUAL PROJECT DEBUTS AT DESIGN WEEK

A uniform that tells the story of the neighborhood through fashion and design: an iconic jacket for the District staff during Milan Design Week.

In the heart of the Porta Venezia District, where the Istituto Secoli headquarters is now located, a project is born that intertwines urban identity, visual culture, and fashion design: Uniform & Visual Project, created through the collaboration between Porta Venezia Design District and Istituto Secoli to develop a functional and recognizable uniform for the District staff during Milan Design Week.

The project stems from the District’s desire—active since 2023 with the goal of enhancing the neighborhood through a network of creative entities and cultural initiatives—to involve new generations in a practical applied design journey, capable of translating the dual soul of Porta Venezia into a “functional” garment: historic and monumental, yet rebellious and contemporary.

Under the creative direction of Arthur Arbesser — a Milan-based Viennese designer known for his work with color and patterns and cross-disciplinary collaborations between fashion, art, and design—and coordinated by the Institute’s faculty team consisting of Domenico Civita (Fashion Design Coordinator) and Francesco Baldassarre (Visual Project Coordinator), young Secoli designers developed uniform proposals and graphic designs, focusing on gender-neutral fit, durability, comfort, and practicality, consistency with the District’s identity, and clear storytelling.

The choice of materials also reinforces the project’s contemporary dimension: the fabrics for the official uniform—designed by the contest winner, Andrea Bartoletti—were provided by Zerow, a B2B marketplace specializing in textile deadstock, emphasizing an approach focused on supply chain responsibility and process quality.

The creations and the project’s narrative will be presented during Design Week in a widespread exhibition route involving the educational spaces of Istituto Secoli and the foyer of the Teatro Elfo Puccini, a key cultural landmark in the District: an open dialogue between fashion and design, created for the audience experiencing Milan’s most international week.

THE JUMPSUIT – TECH PROKE GUEST AT ISTITUTO SECOLI

In recent days, a seminar was held at Istituto Secoli for third-year students, focusing on the innovative Proke App: a technological solution capable of detecting body measurements remotely with maximum precision, accessibility, and ease of use.

In just three minutes, Proke analyzes the physical characteristics of each individual, offering the possibility of creating made-to-measure garments even remotely. This is a unique service of its kind that opens new perspectives for the fashion sector by combining technology and tailoring.

Sharing his direct experience using the app was our Designer to Watch, Edoardo Fabbri, who is leveraging the full potential of Proke for his thesis project. His presentation, alongside the brand’s team, allowed students to gain a concrete understanding of the technology’s applications within the creative and production processes.

An innovation of great value for the fashion industry, which we are proud to integrate into Secoli’s educational projects, offering students increasingly advanced tools in line with market evolutions.

THE WEEK BEGINS WITH THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY FOR THE 2025/2026 ACADEMIC YEAR

The opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 academic year marked the official start of the Institute’s activities, focusing on key themes in fashion education: research, the future prospects of the sector, and the role of Accademia Secoli as a critical and cultural pillar of the fashion system.

The event was opened by Academic Director Enrico Fagone, who invited young future designers to embrace critical thinking, the constant pursuit of beauty in daily actions, and the exploration of the many forms of art, design, and creativity.

This was followed by a speech from Gian Mario Borney, the new Director of Research and Professor of Fashion Economics and Marketing, who focused his address on the profound changes taking place in the sector—from new opportunities to the technological innovations redefining the fashion landscape.
In closing, President Matteo Secoli addressed the students to present the main developments regarding the Institute’s evolution: new spaces, future projects, and the establishment of the new campus in the Certosa District, the result of a collaboration with Arsutoria School, an Italian center of excellence for footwear, leather goods, and accessories education.

A moment of sharing and reflection for the young future Secoli designers, called upon to gain a deeper understanding of the industry and to confirm, with renewed awareness, their choice of study and growth within the Academy.
